Global Citizenship and Action
At Buckley, global education is a common theme throughout the curriculum program and activities. Our goal is to raise student’s awareness about issues of global proportions, whether it is the teaching of a comprehensive geography program from Kindergarten to 8th grade or the studying of current global events in history class.
To further enhance our commitment to educating students to think globally, students in the 7th grade have a Global Perspectives class as a part of their schedule. This class is designed to enhance the students' understanding of the increasing economic, cultural, demographic, political, and environmental interdependence of nations around the world, the phenomenon referred to as "globalization." Discussions include how new technologies have enabled worldwide instant connectivity, how the end of the Cold War had changed the world and the concept of a new flat world.
Students in the sixth and seventh grade participate in the NAIS 20/20 Online Challenge. In this challenge our students are teamed with other schools in the US and overseas to tackle real global problems and find solutions that can be implemented at the local level and in their own communities.
Our Environmental Concerns Committee emphasizes reducing waste, conserve natural resources and reuse and recycle materials. To this end, the school has a recycling center to collect a variety of goods to recycle including phones, eyeglasses, toner cartridges, sneakers, batteries, plastic grocery bags and paper. The school uses environmentally friendly soaps and purchases organic food products for the dining hall. To increase student’s awareness of the environmental concerns, the Buddy Program this year has an Earth theme, emphasizing the interconnectedness of creation – that what helps Earth also helps people.
This awareness of the environment extends to our community service program with students clearing the local streets two times a year of litter and debris. Our upper school students are responsible for the collection of the paper recycling bins located in each classroom and administrative office twice a month.
