Athletics
Teaching skills and character takes place in every venue of Buckley school life. Our physical education and interscholastic athletics programs are no exception. Teacher-coaches provide our students with a foundation for life-long fitness, and a respect for self and others. From the early years through upper school, we encourage participation and emphasize skill development, sportsmanship, team play, and a spirit of healthy competition.
Lower School
Students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade participate in physical education classes four times a week. Toddler and nursery students are involved in physical development activities daily. The program for the youngest children develops positive self-esteem, promotes fun and safety and improves personal fitness levels. Older children learn organized games, teamwork, and the importance of group cooperation. The program focuses on the way the body moves and functions, and the importance of physical fitness. Good sportsmanship and respect for others are qualities that are valued and reinforced in class and on the field. An annual service learning activity that combines fitness with helping others is the "Jump Rope for Heart" program sponsored by the American Heart Association.
Upper School
The physical education program for grades five and six consists of interscholastic athletics in the fall and spring seasons and a traditional physical education curriculum during the winter. In the fall, all students compete in soccer. During the spring, students have a choice between lacrosse and baseball for the boys, and lacrosse and softball for the girls.
The curriculum for the seventh and eighth graders focuses on interscholastic athletics. Students play soccer in the fall and basketball in the winter. In the spring, they choose between lacrosse, baseball, and softball. Skill development, physical fitness, sportsmanship, teamwork, school spirit, and having fun are all goals of the program.
