Greening Buckley

Our enviromental Concerns Committee has emphasized reducing waste, conserving natural resources, and reusing and recycling materials. The school has established a recycling center to collect a variety of goods to recycle including cellular telephones, eyeglasses, toner cartridges, batteries, plastic grocery bags and paper. Our food service partners has served local and organic food products for the dining hall whenever possible. To increase student awareness of environmental concerns, last year the Buddy Program adopted an Earth theme. This awareness of the environment has extended to our community service program in which students have cleared our local road of litter and debris two times a year.  Our Upper School students have been responsible for the collection of paper from the recycling bins located in each classroom and administrative offices.

Our work continues this year in order to help our children make the connection between their behavior and its impact on our Earth. With that expanded vision, in September 2011, we renamed our committee to reflect these new efforts. "The Greening of Buckley Committee" has broadened its scope.  Our recycling efforts have been increased. As the school continues construction and renovation work, the focus is on achieving a balance between preserving the tradition and beauty of our school while reducing energy consumption. Using mulching mowers when mowing the lawns not only cuts down on lawn maintenance, but also makes our grass greener. We eliminate raking or bagging our grass clippings – which, in turn, means we do not have to dispose of those grass clippings or recycle them--all extra work. Additionally, grass clippings are a natural fertilizer.  We will install compact fluorescent and LED light fixtures when replacing incandescent bulbs. In the spring, the Lower School will plant a garden to produce vegetables and spices to use in our kitchen.  Our science teachers will explain the mechanics of these environmentally important changes for the students to understand.

Change is always a challenge, but changing our behavior to protect our natural resources is our goal.
