Buckley employs approximately 75 teachers and staff to operate the school. In addition, we outsource some of our services to independent contractors, such as our cleaning service, geese control, tree maintenance, and dining service. As a matter of due diligence and good business practice, Buckley reevaluates the cost-to-quality ratio of those services on a regular basis.
In 2018/2019, Buckley embarked on a Request For Proposal process to assess our current dining service vendor relative to other available alternatives. RFPs were sent out to the leading food service providers used by NYSAIS schools. We then engaged with five providers, including our current provider. Site visits were planned with each food service company at schools with a similar approach to lunch. In March, each of the providers had an opportunity to come in and present their proposal. The standards we used to evaluate the companies that participated in the RFP process were as follows:
SAGE Dining Services
- High quality, healthy, tasty meals and snacks that are presented in an appetizing way, with options that will appeal to younger and older children, as well as adults;
- Extensive allergy protocol;
- Willingness to accommodate our family style dining;
- Ability to truly outsource the business side of the operation by providing responsive, proactive regional corporate support;
- Excellent communication with students and their parents.
was the clear favorite due to the quality of the food itself, its reputation among other schools, its formalized database of recipes, its attention to allergies, and the anticipated level of service.
One of the features offered by SAGE that you may want to start using now is a mobile app with daily menus (lunch and snacks), filters for the top 12 allergens, eating preferences (vegan, vegetarian, etc), and healthy eating tracker (Performance Spotlight - each menu item is linked to a dot color indicating how much and how often certain foods should appear on a plate). You can also use the app to indicate your favorite menu items and rate them. We encourage you and your children to use the app so that they can continue to be thoughtful users of our dining service and provide SAGE with feedback as they plan ahead.
Go to the App Store, download the free Touch of Sage App, create an account, and find Buckley by using our zip code (11576).
Do not hesitate to contact Director of Food Service, Joe Bocchino, at Sage@buckleycountryday.com
with any questions. Sage has hired Nick Coccaro as our new Chef. The rest of the staff will look very familiar to you and the children!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Theresa Foy for overseeing the thorough process that led to the identification and eventual hiring of our new dining service provider. This was a huge undertaking which she approached with passion and commitment, and always with an eye to our children’s health, as well as that of our faculty and staff.
