Buckley Students Show Financial Prowess—Again

Buckley Country Day School is excited to announce that it has once again placed in the national InvestWrite essay competition with two winners in the spring elementary division. Ariel Arad placed sixth nationally, and her essay was selected out of several thousand entries to win first place in the New York State’s InvestWrite competition. In addition, Vincent Rivellese placed seventh in the nation for this prestigious award.
The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association Foundation (SIFMA) sponsors the InvestWrite competition for students participating in the Stock Market Game in the fall and spring as a way to promote financial literacy for young investors. Students from around the country submit over 15,000 essays that are judged by financial industry professionals.
The topic this spring challenged students to write a 500-700 word essay to answer the following question: Why is “putting all of your eggs in one basket” a bad idea when you are saving and investing for your future? The essay needed to demonstrate an understanding of the different asset classes such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds as well as the importance of diversification.
“We’ve participated in the InvestWrite essay competition for more than ten years, and find that it plays a vital role in solidifying the importance of knowing how to plan financially for the future," said Patricia Russac. "Both the Stock Market Game and InvestWrite give students an opportunity to apply real life skills in designing an investment portfolio as well as understanding different asset classes.”
To date, Buckley has had 15 national InvestWrite winners, and 5 first place New York State winners.
