Band is offered to 5th through 8th grade students who are interested in the following instruments: woodwind, brass, drums. Students are eligible to participate even if they have no experience on their instrument of choice. The class curriculum consists of advancing with notes, rhythms, articulations and overall musicianship. Students in the program have a great opportunity to express themselves on their instrument, learn how to play popular music and create music with their peers.
Chorus is offered to 5th through 8th grade students. All students, regardless of musical and vocal experience are encouraged to join. The class centers on building vocal technique and musicality, with the goal of each student being able to express themselves with a healthy, and beautiful sound both as soloists and within an ensemble. The class will also begin to foster a special relationship and appreciation for music that will prove to be infinitely beneficial throughout the lives of the students
Dance is offered to students in 7th and 8th grade. All students in 7th and 8th grade are encouraged to join dance, regardless of experience. Taught by Mrs. Jennifer Demopoulos, this class provides an expressive outlet for students with a love for dance to illustrate it to the community. Music plays a large role in dance. Dance is a moving art form supported by music which enables the artist to feel the emotion written in the piece of music, and interpreted into movement, and finally presented to the viewer with empathy. Students will begin to appreciate music in a new way by: visually watching music tell a story, to find an emotion or electrify the audience. This course focuses on beginner and advanced beginner levels of jazz, contemporary, lyrical and hip-hop dance styles. Each class begins with a brief warm-up (set to music), followed by exercises floor work in center (jumps &turns and combinations) and continues further by learning set choreography. The class works on several choreographed dance pieces they perform throughout the year.
Percussion is offered to 5th through 8th grade students with or without experience. During this class, students create a balance of melodies and harmonies to various rhythms, and develop musicianship working with an array of melodic and percussive instruments to various styles of music. The teacher, Ms. Caitlin Coon, has a Master’s degree in Music Education and has been directing percussion at Buckley since 2014.
The String Ensemble is offered to 5th through 8th grade students. This class teaches students to follow a conductor and to become better acquainted with contrasting periods and/or styles of music, while reinforcing the fundamentals of string playing. Students focus on tone production, intonation, nuance, phrasing, and sophisticated ensemble listening as they prepare works from the standard string or chamber orchestra repertoire. Students may elect to study the violin, viola, cello or bass. The class is taught by Dr. Elizabeth Glennon. Dr. Glennon graduated from Rice University with a Bachelor of Music. She earned her Master of Music from Eastman School of Music and her Doctorate of Musical Arts from University of Michigan. Dr. Glennon is an accomplished cellist and in recent years has taught music at Suzuki on the Island, Summer Music Institute, as Program Director, and the Diller-Quaile School of Music, in Manhattan. She has been teaching the Strings Ensemble since 2014.
