Buckley Celebrates InvestWrite and American Mathematics Contest Honorees!

On Friday, April 29th, the Upper School and faculty gathered for a special assembly in celebration of five Buckley students who achieved top honors in two national competitions.

The essays of two students were judged to be in the top five nationally in the InvestWrite competition, a culminating activity for The Stock Market Game.

These annual competitions are sponsored by The SIFMA Foundation, an organization dedicated to fostering knowledge and understanding of the financial markets for individuals of all backgrounds with a focus on youth.

Each year, Buckley students write essays, and compete at both the state and national levels, addressing real world financial issues and situations by answering a question about long-term saving and investing. Thousands of industry experts volunteers as essay judges each year.

In the 2021-2022 competition, Buckley students took home two top honors:

Danny Chu ’25 placed fifth in the entire country out of more than 800 submissions in the 4th and 5th grade category. Congratulations, Danny!

Ken Thongpahusatcha ’23 placed third in the entire country in the 6-8th grade category out of more than 1,800 submissions, and took home FIRST PLACE in New York State. Congratulations, Ken!

Our sincere thanks goes out to 5/6 History Teacher and Hagedorn Learning and Library Center Director, Ms. Patricia Russac, who brings her passion and creativity to the classroom as she mentors Buckley students through their participation in The Stock Market Game and InvestWrite competition each year.

In addition to our InvestWrite competition winners, we also recognized the high scores of three Buckley students who participated in the Mathematical Association of America’s Grade 8 American Mathematics Contest. Middle school students from all over the world compete by taking a 24-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills.

The top three scores among Buckley students were:

Third Place: Maximus Joa ‘22
Second Place: Isabella Ramirez ‘23
First Place: Derrick Chen ‘26

Derrick Chen ’26 had scores that placed him in the top 5% nationally earning an Honor Role Certificate, as well as a Certificate of Achievement for a score above 15 in the 6th-grade-and-below category.

A special thank you to 7/8 Mathematics Teacher, Mrs. Sue Rodriguez McLean, for her enthusiasm and dedication to mathematics education in helping our students prepare for the AMC competition this year, and every year.
