Buckley Celebrates Lunar New Year!

On Friday, January 20th, Buckley students of all ages celebrated Lunar New Year!

First, students enjoyed hands-on activities prepared by parent volunteers in the Reception Room. Children decorated paper bowls of Tteokguk, a traditional Korean rice cake soup eaten during the Korean new year, and learned a few words in Korean on Chromebooks. Students watched as Chinese sugar paintings were created to take home, they practiced their dexterity at the Chopstick Challenge. They learned to pleat dumplings with Play-Doh, and to make origami with colorful paper.

At 1:15, the Buckley community gathered in the Auditorium for our Lunar New Year Assembly, led by Jasmine Hembrey '23 and Irene Lee '23. Mandarin learners performed a beautiful series of songs, accompanied by Buckley piano teacher, Ms. Soyoung Chun. Students Sophie Lee '26, Irene Lee '23, and Rhea Ye '29 narrated a video describing Korean new year traditions. Music teachers Dr. Gloria Park (drum and vocals), Ms. Shinae Kim (clarinet), Mr. Kyo Lee (guitar), Dr. Elizabeth Glennon (cello) and Ms. Soyoung Chun (piano) performed a traditional Korean song with Irene Lee '23 on the oboe and Sophie Lee '23 on vocals. Finally, the 8th grade Mandarin learners wrote and performed a fantastic skit retelling the legend of Nian and its significance in Chinese culture.

Our sincere and enthusiastic appreciation goes out to our amazing Mandarin teachers, Ms. Sumeng Guo and Ms. Michelle Chen, for all their hard work in organizing another beautiful and informative Lunar New Year celebration, and to all our music teachers, support staff, and parent volunteers who made this Lunar New Year such a special one for the Buckley community.
