Longtime Buckley Advocate Muran Named Trustee Emeritus

On Thursday night, May 19, Buckley Country Day School was proud to announce at its Trustee Dinner that Lilyan Muran had been named as Trustee Emeritus. Mrs. Muran has been a member of the Buckley community since 1964. She is the parent of Lisa ’71, Bill ’73 and Chris ’77 and the grandparent of Billy ’06, A.J. ’08 and Oliver ’11.

In a video message to the Board of Trustees, accepting the award, Mrs. Muran explained she knew from the moment she walked into Buckley more than 50 years ago, that this was school for her children. She also credited Buckley for creating the “foundation” for all of her children and grandchildren’s success.

Mrs. Muran has made tremendous contributions to Buckley as a parent, volunteer, community leader and board member. Both she and her husband, Van, have been amongst Buckley’s most generous benefactors. Her service, her generosity, and commitment to the school has served as a model for many.

She has served on the Board of Trustees for a total of 20 years, beginning her service in 1996 and has served on many board committees: Technology (3 years); Capital Campaign Steering Committee (2 years); Personnel (8 years); Finance (1 year); Development (10 years); Curriculum (12 years) and the Committee on Trustees (15).

Mrs. Muran is deeply committed to Buckley and as such is passionate in her advocacy, fundraising and giving to the school. In 2006, she was celebrated as the honoree at the annual Spring Gala. Those funds were used to grow the endowment. In 2012, Mrs. Muran chaired Buckley’s annual gala, establishing a new threshold for the event. In addition, Van and Lilyan’s contributions have been remarkably generous and funded many capital projects, as well as the endowment, one of her most cherished projects.

In a recent interview with Buckley’s Spotlight magazine, Chris Muran reflected back on his mother’s accomplishments at Buckley.

“I think [Headmaster] Jackson Bird is the one who really courted her and she was really active,” he  said. “I remember specifically about her launching the Fall Fair and how she was involved in setting up the games for the kids. My mom was very connected to the school and was really a presence throughout my time there.”
