Students Take Part in Black History Month Read-Aloud

Buckley celebrated Black History Month on Friday by holding a Community Read-Aloud with students, advisors, and teachers. The event was held at the usual assembly time, as Lower School students stayed in their homeroom and Upper School students broke up into advisory groups.

Ms. Russac selected books that were appropriate for each grade level. Teachers and advisors then asked and answer questions and, more importantly, engaged students in conversations and activities about the themes addressed in the books.

Among the book choices were: Violet's Music by Angela Johnson (Nursery), Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwell (Pre-K), The Color of Us by Karen Katz (Kindergarten), Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson (first grade), Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People To Freedom by Carole Boston Weatherford (second grade), These Hands by Margaret H. Mason (third grade), Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine (fourth grade), Let's Talk About Race by Julius Lester (fifth grade), Lillian's Right to Vote by Jonah Winter and Shane W. Evans (sixth grade), Only Passing Through: The Story of Sojourner Truth by Anne Rockwell (seventh grade), and Still I Rise by Maya Angelou (eighth grade).

Thank you to Ms. Russac for identifying all the books the students read and to all of our teachers for leading important conversations about Black History.
