Children's Poetry Month Celebration with Amy Ludwig VanDerwater

Poet and author Amy Ludwig VanDerwater captivated Kindergarten, first and second graders recently with her presentation on poetry at Buckley Country Day School.

Author of “A Forest Has a Song” and many other books, VanDerwater has travelled around the country presenting workshops to teachers and children.

The students were fully engaged as she read and performed poems. She used dialogue and hands-on materials to inspire creative writing. She discussed how she finds ideas for her poems and offered many writing tips which were easily understood.

The students learned that poetry can be about anything, and she encouraged them to write a poem about things that are important to them. As part of her presentation the students began to write a poem in their poetry journals. One little girl who is adopted wrote about how special she feels and her wonderful adoptive parents.

Each teacher received a book of poetry autographed by Ms. VanDerwater to take back to their classrooms and continue to inspire their students to write wonderful poems.

Buckley Country Day School's dedication to nurturing a passion for literature and creative expression among its students is unwavering, and Amy Ludwig VanDerwater's visit stands as a shining example of this enduring commitment.
